RAWO deeply appreciates AKI for their generous support that enabled us to reach out to many dogs and their owners through this project.
Through their support, RAWO managed to visit dog owners in their respective homes in this month of August 2026 to identify and register dogs, and this helped us to understand the dog population dynamics in Burera District, mapping their locations and deeply understand what is needed on the ground.
As part of the project, we will vaccinate dogs against rabies, spay, castrate dogs, educate dog owners on responsible dog ownership, dog welfare, and the Five Freedoms of animals.
It is through this project that we aim to keep contributing to the reduction of stray dogs and importantly, reduce the cruelty, abuse, neglect, and suffering that roaming dogs may experience.
We believe this project will create a meaningful impact by contributing to the prevention of rabies as part of One Health Approach and supporting Rwanda’s goal of ending rabies by 2030, while improving dog welfare and strengthening dog owners’ knowledge and skills to provide better care for their dogs.
