Three-day intensive training held in Musanze from 27th May to 29th May, Rwanda Animal Welfare Organization (RAWO), in collaboration with the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors (RCVD) and with support from the Rwanda Dairy Development Project Phase II (RDDP II), successfully trained 22 young private veterinarians and para-veterinarians from Veterinary Sanitary Mandate (VSM) companies across Rwanda.
The training was organized to strengthen young private veterinary professionals’ practical skills and promote high standards of animal health, animal welfare, and sustainable livestock production. Livestock remains a key pillar of Rwanda’s economy, contributing approximately 14% of the national GDP and supporting more than 61% of rural households. Ensuring access to improved quality of veterinary services is therefore essential for improving animal welfare, animal health, production, farmer incomes and food security.

During the training, participants received hands-on instruction in large animal surgery and clinical interventions, including Caesarean sections (C-sections), rumenotomy, humane animal restraint, anesthesia, suture techniques, wound management, post-operative care, hoof trimming, and laparotomy procedures. The training also emphasized on humane farming practices where trainees visited the model farms and learn humane farming and identify the key humane practices that reduce animal suffering while improving livestock performance and health outcomes.

Through this initiative, RAWO continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting farmers, strengthening veterinary services, and advancing animal welfare standards throughout Rwanda. The partnership between RAWO and RCVD reflects a shared vision of building a highly skilled veterinary workforce capable of delivering quality services to livestock keepers nationwide.
RAWO extends its sincere appreciation to RCVD, expert trainers, partners, and all participants whose dedication made the training a success.
RAWO invites livestock farmers, veterinary professionals, development partners, government institutions, and private-sector stakeholders to collaborate in promoting animal welfare, responsible livestock management, and sustainable agricultural development across Rwanda. Together, we can build a healthier future for animals, farmers, and communities.
