Promoting Animal Welfare Through Professional Excellence

From October 28 to 30, 2025, the Rwanda Animal Welfare Organization (RAWO), an accredited Continuous Professional Development (CPD) provider by the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors (RCVD), successfully conducted a specialized training on dogs and cats spay and castration.

This hands-on program enhanced the competencies of Rwandan veterinary professionals, strengthened humane dog population management, and promoted animal welfare across the country. Through expert-led sessions, participants gained advanced knowledge and practical experience essential for improving the standards of small animal practice in Rwanda.

A pioneer in veterinary CPD training

RAWO proudly stands as the pioneer organization to provide professional castration training for veterinary practitioners since the introduction of the CPD framework in Rwanda. This pioneering effort highlights RAWO’s unwavering commitment to building professional excellence and promoting humane veterinary practices nationwide.

The training also served as an important step in strengthening collaboration between RCVD and RAWO, following the signing of their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This partnership aims to advance veterinary capacity building, encourage knowledge exchange, and uphold the highest standards of animal health and welfare.

Expert-led learning for humane veterinary practice

Throughout the three-day training, participants engaged in intensive theoretical and practical sessions that focused on:

  •  Small animal surgery and anaesthesia
  •  Clinical interventions and welfare management
  •  Humane dog population management practices

The program emphasized compassion, professionalism, and ethical responsibility — principles that align with the One Health approach, recognizing the interconnection between the health of people, animals, and the environment.

Driving impact through partnerships

Beyond this training, RAWO continues to make a lasting impact on animal health and welfare by partnering with government institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private sector actors. These collaborations enable the organization to deliver impactful programs in veterinary capacity building, community awareness, and humane dog population management.

Through such collective efforts, RAWO continues to contribute meaningfully to Rwanda’s broader animal welfare and public health goals, promoting a society where animals are treated with care, respect, and dignity.

Looking ahead

RAWO extends heartfelt appreciation to the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors (RCVD), the expert trainers, and all dedicated participants for their shared commitment to advancing veterinary excellence in Rwanda.
